Can Mite-Related Bacteria Flare Up Your Couperose?
Can Mite-Related Bacteria Flare Up Your Couperose?

Couperose is a skin condition whereby the integrity of capillary and cell walls become compromised. When blood flows to the cheeks and we 'blush', our capillaries dilate to allow the blood to flow. If the cell walls are compromised, the capillaries cannot return to their normal size meaning that blood is always flowing to the surface of your skin. This can give our cheeks a permanent red complexion.

Research has shown that several things can contribute to flaring up your Couperose, however new studies by Dr. Kevin Kavanagh Department of biology, National University of Ireland, Maynooth, and Dr. Frank Powell, Consultant Dermatologist, Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Dublin have highlighted a particular culprit!

Every one's skin contains normal inhabitants of mites called Demodex folliculorum. Whilst this may sound a little creepy, these mites are simply microscopic bacteria which are part of us and cannot be seen to the human eye. However, research shows that people who suffer from Couperose have extremely high levels of Demodex mites on their skin. This information has been known for a while in the sphere of dermatology, however it was not possible to determine whether the Couperose was due to the mites or vice versa!

New research published by the British Journal of Dermatology showed up a bacteria which is distinctly associated with Demodex mites called Bacillus oleronius. By testing the effects of this bacteria on Couperose skin-sufferers, researchers found that it stimulated a response in the immune system which contributes to the symptoms of Couperose. This suggests that Demodex mites are attracted to this bacteria and it would appear that the Couperose we experience can be due to the mites themselves.

It is important to note that these mites are not to worry about and they exist on everyone's skin. However, in order to reduce the impact these mites have on our Couperose, we can ensure we stick to a reliable skin-care routine which aims to sanitise and keep our face healthy.
